Spring Cleaning and Mindfulness

Rituals don’t have to look magical, religious, or even particularly spiritual in order to be effective and powerful. As we move into this next season, I can’t help thinking about the idea of spring cleaning. Cleaning itself is a necessary chore but it can also be a metaphysical experience and opportunity to incorporate mindfulness into our everyday lives.

But the act of simply getting rid of things may not be enough to enact powerful change in your life. Alongside the more traditional definition of cleaning, focus on practices like cleansing, releasing, and renewing. If we take the time to make even the mundane act of cleaning mean something, we can change our state of mind and the world around us as well. Focus on these quotes this week to remind you of the importance of incorporating spring cleaning into every aspect of your life.

Saturday, April 16th

“The objective of cleaning is not just to clean, but to feel happiness living within that environment.”
—Marie Kondo

Cleaning is about more than just the action: it’s about curating the world around you, creating a space that you want to inhabit, and giving you room to breathe and move freely. There are hygiene aspects, of course, and there are cleanliness standards you can follow. But, in truth, what is clean for you may not be for someone else. Ask yourself what works for you and what you need for functionality, then follow your own path toward what “clean” looks like.

Sunday, April 17th

“Storms don’t come to destroy you, they come to cleanse you. Lean into it and learn to fly in the storm!”
― Sanjo Jendayi

What is the difference between cleaning and cleansing? Cleansing happens inside of us. It’s emotional, cathartic, spiritual—we feel cleansed after a form of release that goes beyond the physical. Sometimes this sensation can come about from physical cleaning if we create an environment that matches how we feel inside. Usually, however, when we think about cleansing, we think about something deeper. As you clean out your clutter make sure to look inward as well.

Monday, April 18th

“The best lightning rod for your protection is your own spine.”
― Ralph Waldo Emerson

Protection is part of cleaning and cleansing for me. It’s the act of selecting what we will keep. Just as we find things to let go of we need to be conscious about the things we are holding onto. Only you can decide what is worth protecting, what is worth holding onto among the clutter of life. If you have something worth keeping safe, make sure you’re doing what you can to protect it.

Tuesday, April 19th

“The wound is the place where the Light enters you.”
― Rumi

Healing is important if we’re ready to make changes and move forward. We don’t have to forget what has happened or find total closure, but being aware of our own wounds and how they affect us is enough to keep us on the right track. Try not to shy away from the hard work and reflection that is needed to heal.

Wednesday, April 20th

“We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men; and among those fibers, as sympathetic threads, our actions run as causes, and they come back to us as effects.”
― Herman Melville

Connection is important. We are not alone here, on this planet, in our communities, in our passions or sorrows. One of the best things we can do for ourselves is to be mindful of our personal connections. We should strive to put out into the world the kind of care we wish to receive. Take the time to make sure you’re fostering the important relationships in your life.

Thursday, April 21st

“Who imprisoned me here? Who keeps me here? Who can release me? Who’s controlling and constraining my life except…me?”
— Alan Moore

It can feel like we have more control the tighter we hold onto things, the more we try to shape them and force them into the boxes where we think they belong. But releasing things is also a form of taking control. We shape our reality not only by carefully curating our space with what we do want around us but also by deciding what we don’t need to surround ourselves with.

Friday, April 22nd

“We shall find renewal in rest.”
—Lailah Gifty Akita.

At the end of all of this is renewal. When we have taken the time to be mindful about what we bring in, what we let go of, and how we connect, we can take a step back and appreciate the elements of our lives we do have control over, and the things we have changed. It can be a reminder of our power to see how we have shaped our own lives. Setting boundaries, resting, and creating peace are all brilliant ways to pave a new path.
