Spring: Growth and New Beginnings

We’re approaching mid-spring, the season of creation and growth. This time of year is marked by Beltane, the pagan celebration of spring and fertility. (Easter also embodies many of these sentiments, with rabbits and eggs serving as symbols for fertility, and wearing the colors of spring and new flowers is customary.) There is evidence of progeny, bloom, and expansion.

Spring can be identified as the least dramatic of the seasons. Summer burns bright with long, endless days. Autumn is the season of change. Winter has us at odds with the elements. Spring comes as a reprieve: it feels easy, natural. It’s a beginning instead of an ending. This week, I want to look at some of the big energies that spring embodies and discuss how we can connect to these energies to celebrate this season of expansion and growth.

Saturday, April 30

“You can cut all the flowers but you cannot keep Spring from coming.”
—Pablo Neruda

Spring, like all seasons, and time in general, will keep coming at us no matter what we do. The same can be said of opportunities for growth. Life is constantly evolving around us, not just socially but culturally and historically. It’s up to us to see the possibilities and move forward with them.

Sunday, May 1

“[May Day] happens at the beginning of May. It celebrates the height of Spring and the flowering of life.”
—Selena Fox

May Day is a beautiful celebration of spring that involves flowers, ribbons, and dance. It’s a physical embrace of the seasons changing, meant to connect us to the Earth and the Wheel of Time. Take a moment today to appreciate nature and our place in it.

Monday, May 2

“Where Ostara is the time of light’s arrival, Beltane is what grows from its warmth.”
—S. Kelley Harrell

Ostara, which happens in mid-March with the spring equinox, brings the light back to us with ever-longer days. Now, in May, we can reap the fruits of those labors. This is not the early days of spring but the lush, fecund time of maturity. This is the time to appreciate our growth and how far we’ve come personally.

Tuesday, May 3

“She turned to the sunlight, and shook her yellow head, and whispered to her neighbor: Winter is dead.”
—A.A. Milne

Winter is all about saving resources, huddling up, and making it through the dark days. Now, as we bask in mid-spring and approach early summer, we are living in a time of excess. This is the season for eating fresh fruit, being outside, and exploring new life and new ideas. There is still time before we have to endure winter again — we have months to think about all the ways to embrace the rest of the year.

Wednesday, May 4

“Spring is the time of plans and projects.”
—Leo Tolstoy

As the world bursts into bloom, so do our minds. This is a time of year when many of us feel a rush of energy. There is something so hopeful about the return of light and the longer days: there is more time to plan, to think about the future, and to find our place in the world.

Thursday, May 5

“If people did not love one another, I really don’t see what use there would be in having any spring.”
—Victor Hugo

One of the best things about spring is that romance really is in the air. Maybe it’s a biological imperative, maybe it’s just the warm weather drawing us out to explore the outdoors and the sunshine. Either way, this is a great time to get back out there and start dating. If you’re already in a relationship, this is also a good time to take your significant other out to do something romantic.

Friday, May 6

“The deep roots never doubt spring will come.”
—Marty Rubin

It can be hard to see the light when you’re in the midst of darkness. However, just like the roots know that spring will come, try to remember that the light always returns. There is always something new ahead.
