More Likely Than You Think
From their awkwardly adorable waddle walks to their impeccably dressed-for-success tuxedo-like appearances, penguins are among the most unique and unusual of the flightless birds known to man. Generally found in the southern hemisphere, the known 18 species of penguins cover some of the most remote grounds and seas that span from Antarctica to the Galapagos Islands. Given the geography, you may be wondering, “When the heck would I ever have a penguin sighting,” especially if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, however, it’s entirely possible. For instance, I woke up this morning and said good morning to my Google Nest. After a few minutes passed, photographs of penguins began to appear on the Nest’s screensaver. It totally reminded me that I had a penguin article to write, in addition to evoking some of the feelings that the penguin is known for.
Penguin Symbolism
No matter how chaotic a situation, no matter how many
obstacles they encounter, penguins remain flexible and focused, and tackle each
problem as it comes. Penguins intuitively know that there is a light at the end
of each tunnel and they are determined to get there step-by-step.
Penguins are also a symbol of faith, fidelity, and devotion. They are known for their monogamous ways, choosing lifelong mates. Of course, the life of a penguin can be dangerous. Some penguins live in brutal conditions and come up against some seriously aggressive adversaries.
If a penguin’s mate should somehow fail to return from a sea-faring, food-finding expedition, the widow or widower will seek out another mate. Penguins are naturally social creatures, and being single is not the norm. Besides, considering all of the harsh weather they often face, it would be hard to imagine not having someone close to cuddle with.
Penguins live in large communities, sometimes reaching into
the thousands. They live in harmony and peace within their colonies. Therefore,
to us humans, they also symbolize the epitome of friendship and unity.
Positive and Negative Sides
As parents, penguins often divide the responsibilities, and both are equally dedicated to their young. From the time they lay their eggs to the time when a young penguin is able to take care of themselves, both parents see to it that their chick is never alone. They are constantly focused on guarding their young against the elements and will do all they can to see that the young are well fed. Often, while one is home protecting the chick, the other is out in search of food. When one returns, the couple is together just long enough to get reacquainted before they switch roles and part ways again, all in the name of their family’s survival.
Parenthood is important to the penguin. However, on the rare occasion when a chick doesn’t survive, or when a female is unable to breed, their hormonal instincts to parent and protect remain strong. This is the sad part of the penguins’ story, for they are not above kidnapping other’s young in order to fill that void. However, it usually doesn’t last longer than a week or two before the surrogate mother will give up their adoptive child, perhaps because the bond is never quite as fulfilling as having their own. In several studies of penguins, scientists have found that in the absence of a chick to adopt, some adult penguins will take other small birds, animals, or as in one case, a snowball, to dote over. The need to love and nurture is so strong within them, that life without that opportunity seems almost unbearable.
Penguins in Your Dreams
Seeing a penguin in your dreams means you may be
experiencing something negative in your waking world and it is causing you
emotional distress. Perhaps, this problem is not as bad as it seems, or perhaps
you just have to approach it in a different manner. All species of penguins are
black and white – like positive and negative or yin and yang. Therefore, the
penguin arrives to remind you of the need to balance your emotions. Perhaps
beginning a meditation practice will help you arrive at a place of peace and harmony.

However, there is also a negative side to having the penguin

your enthusiasm for love may sometimes cause you to rush and make bad decisions
that often end in short-term relationships. You can also get discouraged easily
when it comes to romantic connections that don’t pan out. Yet you may quickly
find yourself in another entanglement before you’ve had time to think about it,
and if so, the next relationship will probably have a similar end to the first
or the last. You may think you don’t have the ability to reverse this error,
but you do – remember, the penguin is resilient and they know that there is
always light at the end of the tunnel. Just give yourself time to balance,
breathe, and process your emotions.
