Numerology: What Is Your Soul Urge Number?

A woman sits on the couch, with a clipboard on her lap. She holds a pen to her chin thoughtfully.

What Is Numerology?

Numerology is the study of how numerical vibrations affect one’s destiny. It helps you discover your deepest needs and desires. Even better, it can show you how to apply this knowledge in a way that may help you increase your happiness and realize your truest destiny.

There are many different key numbers in numerology: Birthday Numbers, Life Path Numbers, Personality Numbers, Expression Numbers, and more. Among the most important of these is the Soul Urge Number. Your Soul Urge Number gets to the heart of what motivates you, making it a popular method of understanding what someone wants in both love and life.

Why Are Soul Urge Numbers Important?

Your Soul Urge Number is sometimes called the “Heart’s Desire” Number. This is because it reveals what your deepest self needs and craves most. Its influence can be seen in who you want to partner with, what you want to learn and do, and how your work and career affect your day-to-day life.

What Insight Does a Soul Urge Number Provide?

Your Soul Urge Number can provide insight into your purpose on this planet, your probable soulmate relationship(s), and your best work and career choices. It also gives clues about the most favorable locations and environments for you to find and express these decisions!

How To Use Your Soul Urge Number

Your Soul Urge Number can be applied in countless areas of your life. These include, but certainly aren’t limited to…

Love and Romance: Everyone needs partners and friends who understand their deepest needs and desires. Knowing your Soul Urge Number can help you understand what you should ask for in your relationships. Likewise, knowing your loved ones’ Soul Urge Numbers can equip you to understand their needs and support their goals.

Career: To really find fulfillment in work, it’s important to figure out what you were born to do. Even if you don’t make a full career out of it, visiting locations and pursuing activities that help you express those needs will not only contribute to your happiness but also to your spiritual evolution. Your Soul Urge Number can guide you toward these insights, hinting at what might be most exciting and compelling to you.

The information it provides about your inner motivations — conscious or unconscious — can also align your actions with your spiritual needs.

How To Calculate Your Soul Urge Number

Though it can seem intimidating, calculating your Soul Urge Number is in fact surprisingly easy. It can be broken down into a few key steps.

  1. Write down your full birth name (first, middle, last) on a single line.
  2. Pick out the vowels. These are a, e, i, o, u, and y – though y is only counted if it sounds like a vowel when the name is spoken aloud. For instance, when y sounds like a consonant, as in “yes,” you would not use it. However, when it makes an “e” or “a” sound as in “candy” or “day,” you should add it to the equation.
  3. Assign each vowel a numerical value, as follows: a=1, e=5, i=9, o=6, u=3, y=7.
  4. Add together all the vowels in your full name to receive your sum.
  5. If your sum is more than one digit, reduce it to a single digit by adding the two numbers in the sum together. Notably, if your original sum is one of the Master Numbers (11, 22, or 33), there is no need to reduce.

An Example of a Soul Urge Number Calculation

For an example of a Soul Urge Number calculation, let’s take the name Alyson Tracy Merkl.

Note that in this case, the Y in Alyson’s first and middle names are both spoken as vowels. So, the vowels in all three of her names combined are A (1), Y (7), O (6), A (1), Y (7), and E (5).

This becomes the equation 1+7+6+1+7+5, which equals 27.

Since this is a two-digit number, we reduce 27 to 2+7, which equals 9.

So, Alyson’s Soul Urge Number is 9!

I have 7 vowels in my maiden name and 9 in my married name. I don’t understand how to get my numbers out of that. Please help.

annaa…your jiliard = 19 then you go 1+9=10 then you go 1+0=1 Jiliard is soul number 1.

example I did mine, my full name: Cindy Marie Morris it is i=9, y=7, a=1, i=9, e=5, o=6, i=9…add them all together it equals 46 so to get to below 9 or at 9 you take the 46 and do 4+6=10 then 1+0=1 my soul # is 1 laid out…9+7+1+9+5+6+9=46(number is not 9 or lower)
so then… 4+6=10 (number is not 9 or lower)
so then…1+0= 1 soul 1…very easy! Hope that helps =)

To those with questions about what name to use- you use your FULL BIRTH NAME- including your middle name, even if you never use it. Do NOT use your married name- the name on your birth certificate is the one to use because that is the full vibration you resonate to. If you come up with 10, you reduce by 1+0= 1. If you get 23, it would be 2+3=5 and so on. Your soul number is your inner self (also called your heart’s desire or soul urge number by some). It’s what your inner self longs for.

  6. Dawn

The consonants add up to your Personality Number- the way others see you. There’s a really easy book that explains all of this for those who are having a bit of confusion: “The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Numerology”. Get a copy from the library or bookstore or Amazon if this interests you- very easy to follow and understand.

  7. Dawn

Your birth DATE shows your Life Path and Your Name shows your Soul #- only the vowels are calculated to do this. I am a bitdisappointed this article didn’t go into “master numbers”, which are 11, 22, 33 etc- those are NOT reduced when figuring the soul #. Mine is #11, a highly spiritual #- the # of an “old soul”- and I do believe this! 🙂

  8. Kimberly Eubanks Soenyun

Really? No offense people but read ALL THE INSTRUCTIONS. If it breaks down to 10, then reduce AGAIN! to 1+0=1 simple. LADYJILIARD, 19 is 1+9=10=1..also read and check your spelling, so you don’t appear uneducated.

  9. rr

to the autor im just confuse the heart desire four, and soul number 4. if the gender is male, seems it is for the character from women. it means hes a gay?

  10. arvind k arora

I dont Understand how vowels are important and consonental sounds play no important role in determining Soul Number !

  11. Carmen

I’m confused as to how to arrive at the soils number. In the example you give with the name Sherry, you don’t mention her middle or last name as part of the equation. However, you do mention using ones married or birth name which would only pertain to the last name. If we’re supposed to use the middle and last names in addition to the first, how does that get factored in numerically to determine the soul number. Thanks
