Your Daily Focus: November 13-19 | California Psychics

Understanding Your Daily Focus

As we move into the holiday season, I want to look at community, and what it means on a personal, familial, and societal level. Life can seem hard these days, we need each other more and more as time goes on. Our own limitations are more apparent when we try to do everything on our own. Community is about more than just the people in your neighborhood, it’s about the people in your circle. It could be your book club community, it could be online, it could be people with the same illness or disability. The way we forge community in today’s world is ever-shifting.

Regardless of how you form a community, we are better off when working together. Human ingenuity comes from collaboration, our ability to learn collectively, and offering help where it’s needed. In this week’s Daily Focus, I want to look at all the ways in which we can embrace community.

“I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” –Mother Teresa

We never really know the effect our words and our actions will have on others far outside our reach. But if we think back to a small moment that changed us; words from a stranger, a line in a book, a sign we saw years ago—we can find hope or a catalyst for change in the smallest of places. Keep this in mind as you move through this week.

“Well, it seems to me, that all real communities grow out of a shared confrontation with survival. Communities are not produced by sentiment or mere goodwill. They grow out of a shared struggle.”Larry Harvey

Often, the times we form the strongest bonds are when we struggle alongside others. Pain can be lessened when shared, and so we seek others out to lighten that burden. Community is so important if you’re struggling with your health, your relationships, or any aspect of life. There are others who feel as you do, and who are looking to see themselves reflected in you as well.

“A true community is not just about being geographically close to someone or part of the same social web network. It’s about feeling connected and responsible for what happens. Humanity is our ultimate community, and everyone plays a crucial role.” –Yehuda Berg

We are a global community. We can use the access and technology we have to create new social circles, to form new communities, ones that reach across the globe. This also means that, since we are more connected to people everywhere, we bear their pain and share in the responsibility of their healing. We can no longer ignore things happening far away. Keep in mind that we are one global community.

“Our generation has the ability and the responsibility to make our ever-more connected world a more hopeful, stable, and peaceful place.” –Natalie Portman

We have tools that people before us did not have, and how we use them is crucial. We have a responsibility toward peace because we have the tools to enable it. Do your part today to support community efforts and give a platform to those who are fighting for a better future.

Wednesday, November 17

“What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” –Kurt Vonnegut

We, as humans, are not meant to be alone. We all want connection, even if the ways in which we seek it are very different. There is something very human about reaching out, and about being there for others. If you can take the time to be there for someone today, you should.

Thursday, November 18

“Instead of drifting along like a leaf in a river, understand who you are and how you come across to people and what kind of an impact you have on the people around you and the community around you and the world, so that when you go out, you can feel you have made a positive difference.” –Jane Fonda

You are powerful, and the mark you make on the world is a testament to that. When you set out today, think beyond just yourself. Ask yourself what you can do to make an impact that lasts beyond you, that affects not just your friends or your peers, but the global community at large.

Friday, November 19

“We have all known the long loneliness and we have learned that the only solution is love and that love comes with community.” –Dorothy Day

At the end of the day, all we really have is each other. We are all stuck on this spinning rock together, forced to use the same resources, the same natural world, the same forms of communication and connection. The best thing we can do for ourselves and for others is to be present and to move forward with kindness, compassion, and love.
