Understanding Your Daily Focus

I have suffered from nightmares my entire life. Some of my earliest memories include both absolutely terrifying and truly beautiful dreams. Since I was a teenager, I have been working on controlling my dreams through mediation and dreamwork. Even so, I still have dreams that I find odd and bizarre, while also experiencing repeating dreams for many years. There have been times during my life where the idea of going to sleep seems exhausting, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve kept yourself awake to avoid falling into an unwanted dream. This is where dreamwork can come into play.

In this week’s Daily Focus, I want to talk a little bit about what dreamwork is and how we can practice it. Whether you’re trying to get rid of nightmares, bring about specific good dreams, break the pattern of a frustrating recurring dream, or learn to explore your dreams with lucid dreaming, there are things you can do during waking hours that will greatly affect your dreaming hours. Here are a few things to focus on and tips to try out if you’re interested in doing dreamwork.

“Yes: I am a dreamer. For a dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.”Oscar Wilde

If you’re interested in psychic dreams, one of the best things you can do is create a dream pouch and put it under your pillow. Use a small lavender, light blue, or white pouch. You can make one out of fabric and a rubber band if you want. Fill it with Lavender, anise, and pine needles. Write down what you want to focus on, and what questions you want to be answered, then put it in the pouch. Make sure you repeat your question during the day, for this is key to saying it out loud in your dream. Make it simple enough to be a mantra and keep asking!

Sunday, June 6

“All that we see or seem is but a dream within a dream.”Edgar Allan Poe

If you’re having trouble telling dreams from reality, forgetting which details were real and which were mentioned over color-changing cocktails in outer space, then a dream journal is the way to go. Keep a blank one by your bed and write things down as soon as you wake up, even if it’s the middle of the night. This will help you determine patterns that you can recognize both in and out of sleep.

Monday, June 7

“Your visions will become clear only when you can look into your own heart. Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.”C.G. Jung

Jung believed that our dreams were messages from the unknown and that we are all connected by them. The more time you spend looking inward, journaling, meditating, and focusing on your dreams, the more connected with them you will become, and the easier it will be to feel awake when you are dreaming.

Tuesday, June 8

“The pendulum of the mind oscillates between sense and nonsense, not between right and wrong.”C.G. Jung

Our dreams operate on a completely nonsensical morality scale. Try not to dwell on right and wrong, and instead try to focus on things that seem familiar, and things that seem unknown. One of the things I do to help make sense of the familiar parts of my dreams is making a dream map, drawing each new and recurring location from my dreams that I remember.

“The dream is the (disguised) fulfillment of a (suppressed, repressed) wish.”Sigmund Freud

I don’t hold with most of Freud’s ideas, but I do agree that the more time you spend focuses on something (internally or externally) the more it’s going to show up thematically in your dreams. This is why stress dreams are so popular. The more you stress and focus on one thing, the more likely it is to show up in your dreams.

Thursday, June 10

“People think dreams aren’t real just because they aren’t made of matter, of particles. Dreams are real. But they are made of viewpoints, of images, of memories and puns and lost hopes.”Neil Gaiman

Dreams are our brains solving problems, albeit often in really weird ways. The messages we receive in our dreams are important, even if the delivery system sometimes feels ridiculous. Meditating and asking to have clarity in your dreams can help you sort through some of the superfluous imagery and focus on the feelings.

Friday, June 11

“I think we dream so we don’t have to be apart for so long. If we’re in each other’s dreams, we can be together all the time.”A.A. Milne, “Winnie-the-Pooh”

Many people believe that dreams are a cosmic way of communicating. If you’re interested in dream sharing, make a dream pouch for both you and your partner. Include things like lavender, gold, silver, olive oil, and mint. Make sure you both say the same mantra before bed and be patient with the results!
