Life Can Be Overwhelming

No matter how many hours there are in a day, you may feel as if you didn’t get enough accomplished at the end of it, which leaves you unbalanced and ungrounded. Not being centered can affect you in multiple ways: you might not sleep well, you may be short-tempered, or feel as if you’re not in control of yourself. This is why it is so important to find ways to ground yourself every day.

This month, I am challenging you to a Grounding Challenge. 30 days of taking a few minutes out of your day to focus and be still so that you can reacquire a sense of balance. Some of the challenges are short, while others might take a bit more time, but they will all be worth the time and effort. Let’s begin!

Day 1
10-Minute Breathing Exercise

Find a comfortable place to sit and set an alarm for 10 minutes. Firmly place your feet on the ground and close your eyes. Start with taking a nice, long, deep breath – fill your lungs to capacity. Hold this breath for five seconds, then release it. Be aware of how your chest rises and falls when you are inhaling and exhaling. Take notice of any part of your body that has tightened up, and with each breath imagine that area getting looser and less stressed. When the timer goes off, open your eyes slowly and take a final breath before going about your day.

Day 2
Create a Playlist

Music can lift you up when you are low, energize you, bring you to tears, and even touch you in a spiritual way. Creating a playlist is so easy now that you can create one for every mood and situation.

Day 3
Take a Hot Bath

After a long and hectic day, nothing feels better than a long hot soak or a shower. There is something about warm water that can instantly soothe us and bring us back into the moment instead of projecting and losing our focus.

Day 4
Dance to Your Favorite Song

You’ve already created a playlist, now you’re going to put it to work. Pick out your favorite song and break out those dance moves. Being grounded doesn’t always mean staying still and meditative, it can also include physical activities that bring you joy.

Day 5
Restart an Old Hobby

We all have hobbies and interests that we have put on the back burner because life has a way of getting in the way of living. See what hobbies from your past still stir your interest and revive them.

Day 6
Picture the Face of Someone you Love

Visualize their face or imagine the sound of their voice. This is a great way to bring the energy of someone that you love into your life when you need or want them the most.

Day 7
Try the 5-4-3-2-1 Method

Working backward from five, use your senses to list things you notice around you. For example, you might start by listing five things you see, then four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and end with one thing you can taste.

Day 8
Tactile Time

Place your hand under warm water and feel how the water cascades over your hands and fingers. Dry your hand and feel the roughness of the towel as it is wiped over your hand. Smooth lotion over your hands and notice how it sinks in.

Day 9
Journal for 15 Minutes

At first it can be hard to write out your thoughts down, but doing so has so many benefits, both in the short and long-term. Don’t worry about punctuation or getting everything ‘right,’ simply write about where you are, the dream you had last night, or perhaps about something that you are looking forward to doing in the near future. This is something that can be done on a regular basis if you choose to, but don’t feel like you need to write every day.

Day 10
Recite a Favorite Poem or Lyric

Focus on the words, how they flow, and the imagery they create in your mind.

Day 11
Practice Self-Kindness

Repeat kind, compassionate phrases to yourself. You can either say them out loud or quietly in your head. Give yourself a break when you feel as if you fell short in a task or undertaking.

Day 12
Blanket Burrito and Comfort Snuggles

Blankets and stuffies aren’t just for kids anymore. Wrapping yourself up like a taco while holding onto a pillow or other item can help us to recreate feelings of safety and love, and who doesn’t want to feel like that?

Day 13
Get Yourself a ‘Worry’ Stone

Worry stones are smooth stones that often have a small indent in them that you can rub when you feel yourself getting anxious. Always select a stone that you are drawn to and take your time in selecting one.

Day 14
Put Away Your Phone

This one is usually harder than it sounds but putting the phone away for just 10 minutes can allow you to reconnect with yourself.

Day 15
Schedule a Reading with Your Favorite Psychic

Make a Comfort Food

Comfort foods are a wonderful way of grounding yourself because of the memories they evoke and the feelings they elicit. Don’t worry about the calories!

Light a Candle

Enjoying both the scent and the flickering of the flame can have a calming effect.

Day 20
Color

Break out the coloring books and crayons or colored pencils. You can even find coloring books for grownups now, so get yourself a couple and get creative.

Day 21
Go for a Walk

Get outside into nature and enjoy a leisurely stroll.

Day 22
Get Your Hands Dirty

Whether you have a huge yard or only a flowerpot, getting your hands in the dirt and planting flowers or veggies has its rewards, both now and in the future.

Day 23
Sleep In

Give yourself the gift of rest. Grab an eye mask so the light doesn’t disturb you.

Day 24
Make Yourself Laugh

Tell yourself a corny joke and allow yourself a good belly laugh.

Day 25
Go Through an Old Photo Album

Remember people from your past, events that you enjoyed, and trips that you took.

Day 26
Watch the Sun Rise or Set

Take note of the different colors and how they creep across the sky. Can you see the moon or other planets?

Day 27
Listen to the World Around You

Simply sit and with your eyes either open or closed and listen to the world around you. Pay attention to how the sounds layer over one another and how the volume changes. Then listen to how your breathing pattern fits into the overall sound.

Day 28
Use an Anchoring Phrase

Much like a daily mantra can set our mental tone for the day, an anchoring phrase can bring us back to a grounded state when we are off-balance.

Day 29
Earthing

Take your shoes off and walk outside. Feel the grass, dirt, etc. beneath your feet and allow your energy to reach deep into the earth.

Day 30
Be Around People

A lot of grounding techniques focus on things that we can do while alone, but sometimes you just need to be around other peoples’ energies to find your center.
